Rice challenge
Haworth Fairtrade Group have taken up the rice challenge, (see the link). Farmers in Malawi need to sell 90kg of their rice at a fair price to enable a child to go to secondary school for a year. Primary education is free but only about a third of children get a chance to carry on. When Yorkshire was declared the first Fairtrade region in the world it was suggested we take up the challenge and it would only take 11 groups taking 90kg each to have sold 1 tonne. How easy is that! How could we refuse? The only question now is, curry or pudding.
