Sonia’s Smile has been trading for 10 years. We opened on 3rd September 2001 and yesterday we celebrated with a cake (thanks Gail) and wine (thanks Ann and Sian).
We also did some face painting outside to mark the occasion by raising money to twin another toilet for a family in Burundi, Africa (thanks lovely customers and especially Sue).
The shop continues to be successful, by which I don’t mean makes huge profits. We make sufficient, plenty even, to stay in business, pay our overheads (thanks to a very nice landlord), and employ 2 part timers who love the shop as much as I do, but most importantly we are able to help keep our suppliers in business who in turn help some of the most vulnerable in our society.
Fair trade has become a strong and influential force in the last 10 years also, challenging unfair trading systems and we are proud to have played our part.
A sincere thank you to everyone who has passed through the shop, been interested in us, helped us, or connected in any way. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.
Interestingly, laptop problems a week or two ago resulted in losing all email, contacts, addresses etc which, rather than being a tragedy, was quite liberating and a sort of ending of the last chapter and closing of a book, ready to embark on the sequel!
